Bartomeu defends Luis Suarez

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has defended Luis Suarez after his disappointing display against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Catalans beat Diego Simeone’s men 1-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final clash thanks to Lionel Messi’s late winner, but Suarez seemed well below par and missed a golden opportunity to have given Barca the lead.

However, Bartomeu believes the Uruguayan’s form is no cause for concern and insists he has the backing of everyone at the club, as does boss Luis Enrique.

“Luis is a great player and people have very high expectations of him. He has the support and affection of all the people at Barcelona,” he told Canal Plus.

“This was a very intense match between two great teams. Nothing was decided and the tie is still open.

“I respect very much what Luis Enrique is doing. It’s him who makes the decisions and he is full of confidence.”
