Morientes to make playing return

Former Real Madrid and Spain striker Fernando Morientes has agreed to come out of retirement and play for amateur outfit Deportivo Santa Ana.

The 38-year-old originally hung up his boots as a Marseille player in August 2010 and had since split his time between coaching Los Blancos' youth teams and punditry for TV station Cuatro.

However, he left Madrid last summer, and it is believed that his relationship with Santa Ana officials, along with his son's presence at the club, convinced him to join the fifth-tier side.

“He told us that if he felt good, he'd give us a hand. He promised to give us an answer in January and it's been positive,” President Rafael Gonzalez said.

“Our intention is to play him where he feels most comfortable. Physically he's in good condition and hasn't forgotten how to score goals.”

Morientes represented the likes of Madrid, Liverpool, Monaco and Valencia during a top-level career which spanned 15 years.

His greatest successes came at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he lifted three Champions Leagues, while he collected 47 international caps.
