Torres: Early goal crucial

Fernando Torres pointed to his first goal as a crucial moment as Atletico Madrid knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey.

Torres scored twice at Santiago Bernabeu – the first 45 seconds after kick-off, the second 36 seconds after the start of the second half – as Atletico eliminated the holders and their near neighbours.

The goals were Torres’ first and second of his second spell at Vicente Calderon and speaking after the match, El Nino discussed the goals, the match and Antoine Griezmann, who created them both.

“I am very happy. It’s a game that we should feel comfortable with, for the outcome of the round,” he said, AS reports.

“The early goal meant we could play the game we wanted. The tie was never in danger. There were no hassles.

“Playing at Santiago Bernabeu is always complicated. When they were level [at 1-1] there were possibilities but we closed the tie at 2-1.

“The smile on my face is for the win and for scoring my first two goals and to get them in a stadium where I had failed [to score].

“Griezmann? You have to let him develop. He’s a very important player for us and will be more so in the future. You have to enjoy him and let him grow.”
