Abidal meets Barca over future

Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has left the door open for a return to the club after talks with President Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The Frenchman announced his retirement from the game in December when with Greek outfit Olympiacos, having joined them from Monaco following six years with Barca, during which he underwent a liver transplant.

“I’ve spoken to the President and hopefully we’ll have some good news by next week. I’ll be talking to him again before the weekend and my idea is to become the director of the club’s football schools,” revealed Abidal to the club’s official website.

The 35-year-old was asked about the current state of affairs at the Camp Nou with rumours of Lionel Messi being unsettled amid some dressing room unrest.

“What matters is that everyone is united. I’d say to the supporters that, like me, they should be Barca fans until the very end and get behind the team.

“As for Messi I can only see him at Barcelona. He’s the best player in the world and he has to be with this club.”

Abidal was speaking at an event to support a book written by sports journalists entitled ‘Relats Soldaris’, and took the opportunity to present the Catalan Fibrosis Association with a cheque for €51,990 from its sales.
