Sergio: ‘Espanyol not rewarded’

Espanyol boss Sergio Garcia felt his players were not rewarded for the performance they produced against Valencia at Mestalla.

The Catalans went down 2-1 in the last 16 first-leg Copa del Rey tie, Alvaro Negredo netting a late penalty after Cristian Stuani had equalised Jose Gaya’s early opener for the hosts, although Sergio acknowledged the result had been satisfactory.

“It was a great game and at times we were superior to Valencia,” he told a post-match Press conference.

“The result does not tell the story of what happened on the pitch. We came here to play a good game and get a good result, which we did, but the rewards were small for the type of match we played.

“We are leaving here a little angry because we should have at least got a draw, although it’s not a bad result to take into the return leg.

“We are strong at Cornella but must not forget that Valencia are a great team. We know it will be difficult but we still have a chance of going through to the next round,” he declared.
