Low: Spain loss wouldn’t be a disaster

Germany boss Joachim Low insists that losing to Spain on Tuesday would not be a disaster.

The World Champions take on Vicente del Bosque’s team in a friendly international in Vigo and the 54-year-old told a Press conference that the Spanish style of play is one he has followed closely.

“If we lose against Spain it won’t be catastrophic. The important thing is that the players have a winning mentality and we fight for the victory,” said Low.

“Since 2008 Spain has been the main reference point in world football because of how they play and I’ve followed them a lot in the last 10 years, even spending a few months at some of their clubs.

“What I admire most is the way they are restructuring at club level and how they take care of their younger players.

“I’ve always liked the way that football in Spain is understood. We haven’t tried to copy it but to learn from it in order to progress.”

Low has seen his squad decimated by injuries to key players and believes there is still a hangover from their World Cup success in Brazil.

“The injury list is a setback because we are missing so many players and we are battling with the problem.

“[Sami] Khedira and [Shkodran] Mustafi are both doubts but if Khedira does start then he’ll be captain.

“The departure of players like [Phillip] Lahm and [Miroslav] Klose has left a big gap and my job as Coach is to find the answer to the problem.

“I don’t say it as an excuse but I’ve noticed a high level of tiredness. The teams that went furthest in the World Cup are finding it difficult at this stage of qualification for the European Championship, so it’s not just us.

“We need to recharge our batteries and come back stronger in 2015 because our main aim is the next European Championship.”
