Vicente del Bosque has warned against doubting the word of the Spain players who pulled out of the squad through injury.
Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas are both absent from the party named to play Belarus and Germany and there has been speculation over the validity of the injuries of the Chelsea pair.
Costa was left out of the initial squad in an effort to bolster his fitness while Cesc pulled out after playing 90 minutes for his club against Liverpool.
Sergio Ramos has been among the most vocal critics of the absent players but Del Bosque told his pre-match Press conference there’s no reason to question the players.
“It was a normal week. I don’t really know how to answer that [question about the players’ commitment],” he said, AS reports.
“The squad has behaved in an extraordinary way. We’re aware of the criticism but we’re dealing with athletes and we have trust in them.
“There’s no fooling anyone. If anything they’d only deceive themselves but I don’t think that’s what’s happening.
“Sergio Busquets has left the squad through injury before and we have not called him up in the past because he hasn’t been fit.
“I trust the players’ word. We have managed the squad well for six years and worked the way it should be with human relationships.”
On the subject of Busquets, Del Bosque said he is no different from the likes of Cesc and Costa, who have sacrificed a lot for La Roja at other times.
“He has trained well and his commitment is like everyone else’s,” Del Bosque reaffirmed.
“Gerard Pique and Cesc has been with Spain since they were 21 and 17 respectively and have 60-odd and 90-odd caps. They are champions of Europe and of the world and I trust them because they are heroes.
“They have given so much and we can have no doubts about them.
“Costa is a special case. Groin injuries can be crippling. He has dropped the level of his training with his club and we decided not to call him. There was no reason to bring him to Madrid.
“If we doubt his commitment, that’s bad form. Diego is Brazilian and he was naturalised, he chose Spain, and he’s played hurt for us.”
