‘Celta focused on 40 points’

Celta Vigo goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez insists the team’s target is still to reach 40 points as quickly as possible and ensure the drop is avoided.

Alvarez was one of the stars of Celta’s win over Barcelona at Camp Nou and though that result was followed up with a goalless home draw against Granada, the point did take Celta to 20 points.

Celta are seventh in the table after 11 games but when it was put to Alvarez that they can think about getting into the fight for a Europa League place, he replied that their ambitions start lower than that.

“The team is focused on getting to 40 points that will keep us up and for now this is our goal, as soon as possible,” he added, Marca reports.

“We now have half of those points from 11 games and that is something we value.”

Regarding the Granada draw in particular, Alvarez said that when it’s not possible to win, you have to draw, and that’s what Celta did.

“We knew that if we didn’t score early in the game it was going to be a long one because Granada are tough opponents,” he continued.

“The team made a great effort to get three points but it wasn’t to be. The draw allows us to keep adding points and to stay high in the table.”
