Espanyol bid to end Villarreal curse

Espanyol are desperate to end a run of form that has seen them unable to win at home against Villarreal since the 2007-08 season.

Sergio Gonzalez’s men take on the Yellow Submarine at the Power8 Stadium this Sunday with only two points separating them from the relegation places, having suffered some disappointing results recently with a home draw against Deportivo la Coruna and an away reverse at Elche.

According to striker Sergio Garcia [pictured] a win over Villarreal is a must to regain confidence, although it is something they have not achieved on home turf since a 3-1 victory at their old Montjuic ground almost seven years ago.

“We need to win after losing to Elche and we’re looking forward to it,” the Espanyol captain told a Press conference.

“We’ll have to correct the mistakes we made in the last game and we need to take all three points on Sunday. It’s an important game and we don’t want the points to escape us.”

Goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is also aware it is a must-win game for Los Periquitos.

“We have to end our losing streak and also break this Villarreal jinx.

“It won’t be easy but we’ll fight with all we have to get a win before the break for internationals. We are working hard to put things right,” claimed Casillas, whose sentiments were echoed by midfielder Victor Sanchez.

“It’s time to break the jinx and we’ve got to win. If we play like we did against Malaga and Depor, but take our chances this time, then we will do.

“When the next goal goes in I’m sure others will follow, although we can’t repeat the errors we made against Elche,” he warned.
