Casillas targeting top spot

Iker Casillas wants Real Madrid to top the League by Christmas and suggested Los Blancos can better last season’s achievements.

The goalkeeper was speaking at an event for children, where he was asked questions by the assembled crowd.

Having shared his recollections of winning La Decima last season, Casillas was asked about targets set by the team for the current campaign.

“People ask us to exceed the previous year and it will be difficult but the right dynamic is there in the team,” he replied, according to Mundo Deportivo.

“The line we’re on is the one we wanted from the beginning of the season. Before Christmas we must try to get first place in the League and we took an important step by beating Barcelona.

“We aim to advance in the Copa del Rey, we are very close to securing a passage to the next round of the Champions League and the Club World Cup is a tournament we have earned the right to play in after winning La Decima. It can be the icing on 2014.”

Casillas also explained why he became a goalkeeper, revealing it was the position he always wanted to play and takes great pride in holding.

“Everyone has a dream and I had it long ago. When I was small, playing with friends, I always liked being in goal and I was always picked first because I liked going in goal and my friends didn’t.

“You have to know what you can do well. I’ve not had the joy of scoring crucial goals that win trophies but stopping goals gives me another kind of joy.

“To stop hard shots may be as important as scoring goals and it’s very nice.”

Casillas was asked about his future after he hangs up his gloves and said that while he doesn’t know if he will be a Coach, he would like to stay involved.

“It’s nice to train and teach kids what I learned a long time ago from very great Coaches and teammates,” he added.

“If my son wants to play I will encourage him and I’ll support him as much as possible so he can have fun and learn to sacrifice to play football.

“I’d like him to like football so he can be healthy and it’s a way to meet friends and socialise. Football is good for everyone.”
