We didn’t need Suarez claims Zidane

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has turned up the heat ahead of Saturday’s El Clasico with a thinly-disguised swipe at Barcelona.

The Frenchman has revealed that Madrid never had any interest in signing Barca striker Luis Suarez, despite being heavily linked with the Uruguayan for much of last season when he was at Liverpool.

Suarez is set to make his Blaugrana debut at the Bernabeu this weekend, after serving a four-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at this summer’s World Cup, and Zidane, now Coach of Los Blancos’ reserve side, insists the club never wanted him.

“There are always reports linking the big players with Real Madrid, but we had no contact with Liverpool regarding Suarez in the summer because he is not a player that we felt we needed.

“When Real Madrid want a player we work very hard to get the transfer done, but he was not a player we wanted,” claimed Zidane in comments reported by the Daily Mail.

The 42-year-old, who spent five years as a player with Madrid, says the European Champions are more than happy with the business they did in the close season.

“Suarez is obviously a very good player but he was not a someone we felt we needed to add to the squad.

“The players we acquired over the summer were exactly the ones we wanted,” he declared.
