Rodrigo targeting Champions League

Valencia striker Rodrigo believes the club should be targeting a Champions League spot this season and not eyeing the title.

Los Che have made an impressive start to the 2014-15 La Liga campaign, having won five and drawn two of the opening seven games to move into second place behind Barcelona, but Rodrigo believes things should be put into perspective.

“It is exaggerated to talk of winning the title and we should make things clear. In the dressing room the aim is to qualify for the Champions League.

“Football is about passion but people have to realise that we will not be fighting for the League this season.

“We’ve started well and Valencia is a big club, so the fans are more hopeful and beginning to realise we have a good team,” said Rodrigo, who was speaking at an event to renew the sponsorship agreement between clothing company El Ganso and Valencia.

The Brazilian-born 23-year-old, on loan from Benfica, told of his delight at making his Spain debut last Sunday when he came on as an 82nd-minute substitute for Diego Costa in an eventual 4-0 win over Luxembourg.

“I’m very happy to have been there. To make my debut with the national team was an important step for me.

“I’m happy with the small part I played and also happy for the win and Paco [Alcacer],” he concluded.
