‘Some have already decided on Iker’

Vicente Del Bosque has criticised the rush to condemn Iker Casillas and other members of the Spain squad.

There have been calls for David De Gea to replace the captain against Luxembourg following Casillas’ error in the defeat to Slovakia.

Del Bosque has appeared on Spanish television with the subject of the goalkeeper’s position leading the discussion.

“I thought there could be a smooth transition in Spain’s goal. Now it seems impossible…so be it,” Del Bosque said, AS reports.

“It’s impossible in a civilised country to change a goalkeeper for one mistake. Some people are taking advantage and had already decided which goalkeeper should play [against Luxembourg] regardless of what happened on Thursday.

“We’ll see if De Gea or another goalkeeper plays. Whoever plays will deserve it. It’s a difficult issue.”

Del Bosque added that his concerns over the desire to judge his squad aren’t limited to the goalkeeper’s position.

“People ask me to bring five new players. Ok. I would say that it’s not easy to leave out five players,” he replied.
