Fabio Coentrao has been forced to pull out of the Portugal squad due to problems with his left knee.
“Fabiostill has pain in his left knee and the medical department believe he is not fit for selection,” read a statement issued by the Portuguese Football Federation, who confirmed the Real Madrid defender had left the national team training camp on Monday.
The loss of the 26-year-old will be a big blow for new Coach Fernando Santos as he prepares for Saturday’s friendly with France and next week’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Denmark.
Left-back Coentrao has made 47 international appearances for Portugal since making his debut against Bosnia-Herzegovina in November 2009, scoring four times.
