Former Barcelona goalkeeper Pedro Artola believes the club’s current goalkeepers don’t benefit from Luis Enrique’s rotations.
Claudio Bravo has been the first choice for the League campaign but Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has played in the Champions League, with Jordi Masip backing up the pair.
Bravo surpassed Artola’s record of minutes without conceding at the start of the season as he kept a clean sheet against Rayo Vallecano, with Artola asked by AS for his thoughts on the life of a goalkeeper today.
“For me the record was just another record, nothing more,” Artola, who set the benchmark in 1977, said.
“Football has evolved in many ways since my time and that influences goalkeepers.
“For example, you can’t pick up the ball now when taking a pass from your teammate.
“But Barca always wanted to play very offensively. Then we used our hands more but having a high defence meant you had to be aware of everything and out of the goal when they went back to a teammate.
“Barca’s goalkeepers today have to deal with the legacy of Victor Valdes and that won’t be easy to overcome.
“That said, they are all interesting resources for the club.
“Goalkeepers have to have security and the position is so specific they have to have tranquillity.”
