Simeone ‘pleased’ with Almeria win

Diego Simeone said he was ‘pleased’ after seeing his Atletico Madrid side overcome Almeria 1-0 at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos.

Los Rojiblancos had never won at Almeria and had Joao Mirando’s second-half header from a corner to thank for taking all three points back to the Spanish capital, and Simeone praised his players for their ability at set-pieces.

“I’m pleased to have won because this was a valuable victory,” the Argentine told a post-match Press conference.

“Everybody talks about strategy but to score a goal from a corner you have to have won that corner in the first place. The team took advantage of it because the players created that possibility.

“We controlled the game from a possession point of view and both goalkeepers were very good in the first half.

“In the second half, after we scored, we were able to take advantage of more space up front and created opportunities.

“In the end we won 1-0 against a very workmanlike team that never gave up,” declared Simeone.
