Simeone responds to Calderon whistles

Diego Simeone has responded to the whistling of his team by fans following the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo last weekend.

Los Rojiblancos were surprisingly beaten by Olympiacos in the Champions League last week and followed up with a lacklustre display against the Galicians at the Vicente Calderon.

However, Simeone is refusing to blame the fans’ reaction and tried to put a positive spin on things.

“It was a spontaneous act from supporters who love their team and their Coach, so I’m surprised it has caused so much talk,” the Argentine told a Press conference.

“All they are doing is thinking about what is best for the team. Sometimes in football you can approve of certain things that are done and not others.

“Even though you are loved by the Atleti fans it’s normal that they can analyse any decisions you make.”

Atletico take on Almeria at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos on Wednesday and Simeone stressed the significance of the match to his team.

“It will be an important game against a team that has improved a lot since last season. They are good in the air and will ask a lot of questions of us defensively.

“They have been working well and are more at home in the top flight this year, so I hope we can handle them.”

Simeone also touched on the uncharacteristic mistakes his team has been making in defence.

“There are situations we need to improve upon as a team because, although there have been collective errors, they start off as individual mistakes.

“By conceding less goals we have a better chance of winning. Hopefully we can get back to keeping clean sheets,” he concluded.
