Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has said the champions travel to Real Madrid tomorrow with the intention of winning.
Santiago Bernabeu hosts the first League derby of the season with Godin saying in an interview with AS that whoever the opposition, Atletico first think about getting three points.
The Uruguay international conceded that a draw may be a good result but they won’t play for one, but will take heart from beating Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana.
“A game like this is not just another game. We know it’s something different,” Godin said.
“We have won games, finals, Leagues and that’s something very difficult to achieve. It gives us confidence we’re on the right track.
“Our mindset is to win every game. But we know we’re playing Real Madrid in their stadium. The mentality is to win. How the game turns out is another thing and maybe then a draw is good.
“We want to win the next game and win on Saturday. We want to continue competing for and winning trophies. We’ll see at the end of the season if we can.
“That is our mentality and our desire. In fact we’ve already won one this year.”
Godin also admitted that the memory of losing to Madrid in the Champions League final was still on his mind, thanking football for giving Atletico the chance to put right that defeat.
“We were very close and they had a narrow escape,” he said of the match that saw Sergio Ramos’ late equaliser lead to a 4-1 Madrid win.
“But this is football. A week before we won the League on Barcelona’s pitch. These things make you learn and grow.
“Football gives you a chance for revenge and I’m sure we will take it.”
