Castro eyes European spot

Real Sociedad winger Gonzalo ‘Chori’ Castro is eyeing at least a European place for the San Sebastian club this season.

The Uruguayan international [pictured, far left] has had a taste of playing in Europe the last two years and he is desperate to be part of it again, although he acknowledges it will be far from easy.

“Our aim is to be in the European places. We’ve had two consecutive seasons in Europe but it is going to difficult as there are teams, some of whom were behind us last year, that have strengthened really well and want to be ahead of us,” he told a Press conference.

“We have a squad that has shown we can be up there. Now [after La Real’s Europa League exit] we are left with La Liga and whatever happens in the Copa del Rey.”

After the Basques’ first victory of the season over Real Madrid almost two weeks ago and the break for international matches, Castro feels the players have now had enough time to recharge their batteries.

“Since the season started we have not stopped. We went into the break with a victory and it’s not the same having no points from a possible six as it is having three.

“We now have to have a different mentality, to keep working and maintain our physical fitness because we can still keep on improving.

“As always, we will be going out to win every match and we have had more days to be fresh for these games, so tiredness will not be an excuse,” he maintained.
