The father of Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld has said his son can’t remain a back-up player much longer.
Alderweireld was last season used by Diego Simeone as cover for first-choice centre-backs Diego Godin and Miranda, or occasionally as a right-back.
AS reports Vic Alderweireld, who acts as his son’s agent, as telling Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad that the situation is going to come to a head sooner or later.
“Toby wants to play. A transfer would be the best option,” the senior Alderweireld said.
“Since last year we have had several discussions on this issue and Atletico understand and believe it makes no sense for Toby to have another year on the bench.”
Alderweireld signed for Atletico from Ajax in 2013, agreeing a four-year contract.
