Vermaelen: An honour to play for Barca

Thomas Vermaelen has said it’s an honour to represent Barcelona as he completes his move from Premier League Arsenal.

It was yesterday confirmed that Barca and the Gunners had agreed a fee and Vermaelen and Barca had agreed terms, with the Belgium international to today sign a five-year contract after passing a medical.

Vermaelen has told Barca’s official website that he feels he is in a privileged position in winning a move to Camp Nou.

“It’s the dream of many people to play at this club,” Mundo Deportivo report Vermaelen as saying.

“You play with the best players in the world and therefore it’s a great honour to play with them here.

“It’s good for me because I will be a better player if I train every day with these players.”

Vermaelen added that he feels he will cope with the pressure of representing La Blaugrana because there are similarities in having played for Arsenal for five years.

“I played at Arsenal and what I do here is no different,” he continued.

“We should be winning every game and I understand there will always be pressure to perform well and that’s what I try to do.”

The 28-year-old also shared his feeling that settling in to La Liga won’t be a problem, although he acknowledged it is a concern.

“It’s a different country, a different language and different Coaches,” he reflected.

“It won’t be easy. I have to adapt as quickly as possible and then we’ll see where we are.”
