Santos ‘proud’ of Greece

Greece Coach Fernando Santos has spoken of his pride at having taken his team to the World Cup knockout stages.

Costa Rica bested the Euro 2004 winners on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with the match Santos’ last in charge as his contract expires imminently.

“We believed we could do it. We tried very hard,” Santos told the Press after the match.

“We did not think clear in extra time. I am very proud of our team.”

Thiofanis Gekas missed in the shootout, his effort saved by Levante’s Keylor Navas, before Michael Umana netted the decisive spot kick.

Costa Rica played the final hour of the match with 10 men following the sending off of Oscar Duarte.
