Karagounis: Sad but proud

Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis has revealed his sadness and his pride at the team’s World Cup performance.

The Euro 2004 winners bowed out at the Round of 16 stage with a penalty shootout defeat to Costa Rica, with Karagounis calling time on his international career after the defeat.

Marca reports the midfielder as saying his side should have wrapped up the game before penalties were required, with Costa Rica going down to 10 men shortly after the hour mark.

“We note the support of our people and it’s a pity we can’t celebrate with all the Greeks again,” Karagounis said.

“We’re sad but proud of our history because we gave it everything.

“We should have closed the game before penalties. Once you reach that point the chances of qualifying are 50% and it’s about luck.

“After we equalised we could have scored another goal. Our opponents had 10 and had no chances.

“The team grew through this tournament. The young players gained experience for what is to come in the future and I hope they put in more performances like this.”
