Manchester City midfielder David Silva doesn’t want to look for excuses to explain Spain’s early exit from the World Cup.
Silva was put before the Press to preview La Roja’s final game, against Australia tomorrow, and denied that tiredness played any role in the team’s disappointing results.
“I think back and back. We won two European Championships and the World Cup and the dates were the same,” AS reports Silva as saying.
“I don’t think the dates are an excuse, although there are a lot of games and it is increasingly difficult to endure it physically.
“The team in general hasn’t been good and our opponents have been. We have faced two good teams that have gone through.
“We have to know how to lose. There are no excuses. We have not been good and our rivals have.
“We have to try to finish well. We haven’t been good and this World Cup hasn’t been good for us. It hasn’t been easy. It’s hard for us to come home at the first exit.”
Silva was asked about the chance he had to score against the Netherlands, a goal that could have changed the course of the game and, therefore, Spain’s World Cup.
He also confirmed he wanted to remain part of the national team for the future, but acknowledged it was inevitable there would be changes now.
“It came back to me after the game. Whenever you have a chance to score and you don’t take it, it always comes back to you,” he said.
“Not only in that game but all along my career, when I’ve had a chance to score but haven’t, we’ve lost.
“People serve for years while other young players are pushing them.
“There are always changes. It has been like that throughout life. Hopefully the people who come will be raring to go and in great condition.
“We are young and we want to stay in the team if we can and if the Coach will have us.”
