Del Bosque: Deserved elimination

Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque admits his team deserved to be eliminated from the 2014 World Cup after defeat to Chile.

The result against the South Americans, coupled with last Friday’s demolition at the hands of Holland, has sent the defending world champions spiralling out of the competition at the earliest possible stage.

“It was a deserved elimination,” Del Bosque reflected after the final whistle at the Maracana. "Our rivals were superior and I have no excuses for the defeats.

“We showed character, we went forward but we weren’t fortunate in front of goal.

“The players ran. Of course, when you are behind you have to do more of the running.

"We all put in a great effort and we had good intentions but something was missing.

"It's not the time to weight up the consequences, we will make the right decisions and we have time ahead to do so.

“I think that today, regarding this match we were timid. It wasn’t enough to get the result.

“I don’t want to reflect too soon on what has happened. We need to give ourselves a little bit of time and have a little more certainty.

“We have been working for 25 days and we thought we were in good shape. Everyone felt really good but the reality was something else.

“In the first half we gave the ball away and that allowed Chile to put us under pressure. We have fallen, we have been inferior and all we can do is look to the future. Nothing else.”

Del Bosque then briefly stated now is not the time to discuss his future as national team boss.

"It's not the moment to discuss my future, nor the team's."
