Torres: Spain are ready for Chile

Spain striker Fernando Torres believes the team are ready to get their World Cup back on track against Chile.

The sides meet on Wednesday and according to AS, Torres has told Al Primer Toque that the team need to knuckle down and regroup.

“We’ve all had rough times and have come out ahead. In the end we’ve overcome such awkward situations with no margin for error,” Torres said.

“We’re not afraid. We’re surprised and disappointed by the game and the image we projected. As the days pass we must return to normal.

“We have full confidence we can beat Chile and Australia and be in the next phase.

“Typically when a difficult situation arises there is doubt and you want to see reality in a different way than it is. It’s normal in football and in life. Now, with a cooler head, we must see things as they are.

“It’s not an irreversible situation, but it’s not a good situation. We have to win. The message after the first match is confidence. That’s the key word.”

Torres touched on Iker Casillas, who made an error to give the Dutch a goal, but according to the Chelsea forward the captain has taken a leader’s role in the aftermath.

“Iker’s spoken about the game, with a message of serenity, and to look at ourselves and not to look outside,” he continued.

“It was an accident. We were overcome with the feeling of not being able to lift the game. It’s even harder when the group has already proven it can do it.

“Then the reviews are much tougher. These are things that make it difficult but not impossible.

“The feeling was that we can’t win, we’re overcome. It was hard to take. There’s a lot of time left.

“Chile are a very aggressive team and play to the limit. They run a lot of risks but perhaps not so many on Wednesday.

“We have to play with those cards, patience, creating chances. We have to play convinced that we will do it in the best way. We can’t suffer on the counter.

“You start looking forward to the game the day after the Netherlands. We wanted to be in the Maracana and to start playing to regain the sensation. After a tough loss you want an immediate win, we need to regain the sensation.

“We can control the attacks of Chile. We’re ready to face them. The group has had moments of extreme situations to get their best side and this is another of them.

“If you had asked a week ago what would happen against Chile and Australia you would have had no doubt we will win.”

Torres was also asked about club matters, with Chelsea signing Cesc Fabregas and close to clinching the signature of Diego Costa.

“I wish Torres has come a few years earlier,” he said of the Spain midfielder. “It’s a blessing for the forwards.

“I always look for that final pass. He’s a player Chelsea don’t have.

“There’s already talk Chelsea have signed a striker. If it’s Diego then he’s welcome. Competition is always high at big clubs.”
