Mata proud to be in Spain squad

Juan Mata has said he has never been prouder to be part of the Spain squad after the way the players faced up to the defeat to the Netherlands.

La Roja’s defence of the World Cup got off to a catastrophic start with a 5-1 defeat in the Group B opener but Mata says the players haven’t shirked responsibility, impressively so, according to the Manchester United man.

“I am more proud than ever to belong to this group, which is like a family. In difficult times, the biggest show their faces,” AS reports Mata as saying.

“Everyone is convinced we can turn this around. The important thing is the confidence we have in the squad.

“We’re not dead. Losing was a blow for everyone but we must have the same mentality as through the years.”

Mata was also asked about both the climate in which the Chile game on Wednesday will be played, and the prospect of playing in the famous Maracana.

“The Maracana is special for anyone. It’s a mythical stadium. Hopefully the result is different from the final of the Confederations Cup,” Mata said.

“Last year we were lucky to be playing in the Maracana. Individually everyone wants to play but the most important thing is that the team can win and get the essential three points.

“I don’t think the fact that it was cold in Curitiba and hot in Rio is a determining factor. We were happy with the facilities in Curitiba. It was calm, focused and there’s no excuse.”
