Geiger to ref Spain-Chile

United States official Mark Geiger will take charge of Spain’s second World Cup group game, against Chile on Wednesday.

AS reports that the meeting of the two La Rojas will be Geiger’s second game of the tournament, having also officiated the game between Colombia and Greece, a 3-0 win for the South Americans.

Geiger, 39, has been a referee in Major League Soccer since 2004 and in 2011 oversaw the final of the Under-20 World Cup between Brazil and Portugal.

He also refereed at the London Olympics, taking the whistle for the match between Spain and Japan, a 1-0 win for the Blue Samurai.

David De Gea, Jordi Alba, Javi Martinez, Koke and Juan Mata all started that game, at Scotland’s Hampden Park.

Geiger sent off Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez in the match, Inigo pulling down Kensuke Nagai just outside the penalty area.
