Pirlo proud to captain Italy

Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has spoken of his pride at captaining his country in the World Cup win over England.

The Azzurri saw off the Three Lions through goals from Claudio Marchisio and Mario Balotelli, with Daniel Sturridge netting in reply.

Pirlo stepped in to replace Gianluigi Buffon as skipper after the goalkeeper was ruled out of the match through injury.

“I was the captain of a courageous Italy that wanted to impose its style on England,” the Juventus playmaker told the Press.

“I think we did that in the first half and for a large part of the second half too. It was a great game despite the heat.

“We’re a good team and we can go forward.”
