Villa ‘feeling good’ before WC opener

David Villa has said he is in good shape for Spain’s first game in the defence of their World Cup.

La Roja’s record scorer is to join MLS side New York City FC after the tournament, but told Radio Marca that reports he would join Melbourne City on loan where wide of the mark.

Villa said that while he could turn out for the Australians – owned, as is New York City, by Manchester City – it’s likely to be a one-off.

“The wait for the World Cup has been a long one because we all want to start playing these games,” the former Atletico Madrid forward said.

“I won’t go to Australia. I’ll set-up in New York after the summer and I’ll train until the start of the season. If I go to Melbourne it’ll just be to play a game on a stage.

“Right now I feel physically good and strong. I’m most relaxed about the games and I’ll try to do my best.

“We have to worry about the Dutch but not be surprised at anything. It’s true that it’s a complicated start but we have no choice.

“I feel proud that teams now play depending on how we do. But the past is useless and we are prepared for every game.

“This is a hard list to choose from for the Coach and the competition is good. If there’s more competition then there’s more on the field.

“We have all the weapons to get to the final. We’ve won three titles in a row and nobody has done that, so we know how people around the world see us. That’s the difficulty and beauty of this sport.

“If we get the World Cup it will be a significant milestone to be unique, and we have more ambition than ever.”
