Spain's World Cup defence got off to the worst possible start, having been thrashed 5-1 against Netherlands. Cronan Yu runs through the ratings.
Iker Casillas: 4
San Iker had the chance to establish his name in folklore of the World Cup, having not conceded a goal in the tournament for over 400 consecutive minutes. However, against Van Gaal’s troops, the 33-year-old was helpless. Although far from his best, he showed glimpses of his past, with a few smart saves.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 4
Had very little impact on the match – both offensively and defensively. Admittedly, the Chelsea man tried to initiate attacks on the right wing, but was largely ineffective as the Oranje continued to deny him any space forward.
Sergio Ramos: 1
Vastly disappointing from the off – was slow and was poor in his marking. Was lucky the Netherlands didn’t score more as chances were aplenty for the Dutch.
Gerard Pique: 2
Failed to strike up a fruitful partnership with Ramos and left too many gaps for Robben and co. to exploit. Will need to improve if Spain want to qualify.
Jordi Alba: 3
Similar to Azpilicueta in that he tried to initiate attacks. However, his advanced attacking positions often left the centre-backs exposed to quick counter attacks.
Xabi Alonso: 2
Scored Spain’s only goal of the match, coolly slotting the ball past Cillessen. Otherwise, failed to impress in his central midfield role. Made way for Pedro in the 63rd minute.
Sergio Busquets: 2
Decent pass success rate but his performance will be remembered more for his theatrical play-acting than his contribution to Spain’s cause.
Xavi: 3
Played Costa into the area with a peach of a through-ball, who subsequently earned a controversial penalty. All-in-all, was relatively quiet and was unable to exert his usual influence on the team.
David Silva: 2
Started off on the right-wing and had a few chances to score, most notably his chance in the first half to extend Spain’s lead after Iniesta’s through-ball.
Diego Costa: 2
Won his side a controversial penalty in the first-half to give Spain the lead. However, looked lost and, unfortunately for Spain fans, failed to impress in his No 9 role – relatively quiet throughout.
Andres Iniesta: 5
Liveliest of Spaniards in attack, played in majestic passes and tested Cillessen with a couple of good efforts.
Substitutes
Pedro: 3
Had a few good chances when he came on and made intelligent runs to provide for options in attack.
Fernando Torres: 2
Failed to fire and his missed a golden opportunity late on to salvage a goal.
Fabregas: No rating
Replaced David Silva on 78 minutes.
