Line-ups: Spain-Netherlands

Diego Costa starts for Spain as Vicente Del Bosque’s side get the defence of the World Cup underway against the Netherlands.

Brazil-born Costa has made a handful of friendly appearances for La Roja but plays in his first competitive game, part of an attacking front-three with Andres Iniesta, whose goal beet the Dutch in the final four years ago, and David Silva.

Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso and Xavi Hernandez form the midfield – the same trio that started the final in 2010.

Cesar Azpilicueta gets the nod at right-back with Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos as the centre-backs, while Jordi Alba is fit to take his place at left-back, with Iker Casillas in goal.

The Netherlands look to have lined-up with a 5-3-2 formation, as was rumoured in the week building up to the fixture.

Jasper Cillessen starts in goal with Daryl Janmaat, Ron Vlaar, Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins Indi and Daley Blind making up the defence.

Nigel de Jong – he of the chest-high lunge on Alonso in the 2010 encounter – is joined by Jonathan de Guzman, the Villarreal midfielder on loan at Swansea City, and former Real Madrid playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie will form the attack for Louis van Gaal’s side.

Spain: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Pique, Ramos, Alba; Busquets, Alonso, Xavi; Silva, Iniesta, Costa

Netherlands: Cillessen; Janmaat, Vlaar, de Vrij, Martins Indi, Blind; de Jong, de Guzman, Sneijder; Robben, van Persie
