Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque has spoken of his happiness with the performances of his squad in training prior to their World Cup opener.
La Roja begin the defence of the trophy on Friday against 2010 runners-up the Netherlands, and Del Bosque told Radio Marca that the group has done well since they first came together almost a month ago.
“The performance has been great, the attitude is very good and I am delighted with the work in these three weeks of training,” he said.
“Everyone has worked in good condition and I’ll choose who I believe is best for the game. I have several alternatives and with the quality of our players, it’s hard to leave so many on the bench.
“I don’t think I can make this team into a defensive one. We’re a balanced team.
“We’re going to try and win. It’s important not to lose, but that’s not our goal.”
It’s been suggested that the Dutch will go with a five-man defence but Del Bosque said he wouldn’t be surprised to see a different approach.
“They might also play with four defenders and two open. They’re strength is to find a quick way out of defence,” he continued.
“We’ll try to be faithful to what we have always done. We will consider what the Netherlands are, with rapid transitions.”
Del Bosque also shared the status of a number of his players, both those who he says are content, and those whose participation is a doubt.
“Iker Casillas is all smiles. He won the Cup and the Champions League. He’s in his fourth World Cup and should convey that leadership,” Del Bosque added.
“We have confidence in all of our defenders. They’ve all trained well.
“Both Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso are important in a position where football is focused and they can break down our opponents.
“Diego Costa has been getting better and better. He did well in the test against El Salvador.
“Jordi Alba’s been out with toothache but hopefully it won’t affect his performance.”
Del Bosque, asked for his opinion on the tournament opener – Brazil vs. Croatia – warned that it wouldn’t be easy for the hosts.
“No, I don’t think it will be a cakewalk for Brazil,” he said.
“Croatia is a team without complications and with good players.”
