Joel happy at Everton

Joel Robles has said he is happy at Everton and spoken of his excitement at the future under Roberto Martinez.

Joel joined the Toffees last summer, brought to Goodison Park by Martinez after playing under the Spaniard at Wigan Athletic.

He has mostly played understudy to Tim Howard but told Mundo Deportivo he isn’t looking to leave Everton, and wants to fight the United States international for his place.

“I am very happy at Everton and hopefully I’ll stay here for a long time,” the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper said.

“But I have the pain of not being able to stay at Atletico. I fulfilled the dream of playing in the first team but I couldn’t keep them in my life.

“I’m not going to leave Everton, even if I was given the chance. It’s a club with great potential and I think [the manager] will grow well in the coming years.

“Now my goal is to fight to play. We were excited about maybe entering the Champions League and we will play in the Europa League. It’s exciting.”

Joel also paid tribute to his former Atletico colleagues, commending them on last season which saw Atletico land the League title and reach the Champions League final.

“Everybody has asked me about Atletico. They’ve been very popular,” he revealed.

“I have enjoyed it as a fan. I’m very proud of these players and this team. They were League champions and half-a-minute from being European champions, having eliminated Milan, Barca and Chelsea.

“There are many who have worked for a long time in the club and they have earned it. I’m very glad for them.”

Joel also recommended former Everton teammate Romelu Lukaku to Atletico as Diego Costa’s replacement.
