Alonso: Illarra is the future

Xabi Alonso has claimed that Asier Illarramendi is ‘the future’ of Real Madrid, and insists that he hasn’t decided on his international future yet.

The Spain Under-21 international joined Los Blancos last summer from Real Sociedad, and has played second fiddle to the former Liverpool midfielder this term.

However, Alonso believes that Illarra can become a Merengues starter for years to come.

“Illarra is the future. This is his first year, with big changes,” he told Cadena Cope.

“It's a giant leap for him. I have no doubts about him. Real is like a bull and you have to be ready for it, and Asier will be.

“I haven't decided on leaving the national team as yet. I'm very focused on the World Cup and depending how it all turns out, I'll make my decision then.

“If my mind and body still want to continue, then I will.”

He then went on to comment on this summer’s World Cup, and group matches against Chile and Holland.

“We're not more afraid of Chile than Holland, but we know the Chileans well and they have always given us problems whenever we have played against them – they're difficult to play against.”
