Gil Marin: Atletico don’t need to sell

Miguel Angel Gil Marin has said Atletico Madrid have no need or desire to sell any of their key players this summer.

Marca reports the Atletico chief executive as denying the club has any financial imperative to offload anyone, adding that if an Atletico player does want to leave then they will only be sold for their contractual release clause.

“Our organisation doesn’t need to sell any member of the first team to balance the books,” Gil Marin told the club’s official website.

“We understand the interest in our players from other clubs. It’s normal that the season they have had doesn’t go unnoticed by the most powerful clubs in the world.

“We further understand that the players who have been instrumental in this great campaign want to improve and we are willing to improve [their contract] within the possibilities of the club.

“But for those who do not wish to stay with us, we refer you to the termination clause.

“We don’t want or need to sell any important player in our workforce. Whoever wants to leave must do so against the wishes of Atletico.”

Gil Marin added that the rather than spend a summer saying goodbye to players, Atletico are in a position to renew the contracts of their most important players and make some additions as well.

“We’ve worked to make a solid team to provide continuity and a large portion of our investment has been earmarked for this purpose,” he said.

“We have undertaken the renovation of those who were considered key parts of the team in order to make them feel [their contributions] have been recognised.

“I think we have a good group and each season we have been adding new players to enhance the competitiveness of the team and that’s our idea for the new campaign – maintain the group and improve competition for places.”
