‘Griezmann can make history at Atleti’

Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin believes Antoine Griezmann can make history if he stays at the club.

Speaking after the 3-0 Europa League final victory over Marseille , Gil Marin insisted that the Frenchman – who was on target twice against the Ligue 1 side – did not need to move to Barcelona this summer to make his mark as one of the footballing greats.

“It all depends on his feelings more than anything else, whatever he decides, and if he wants to make history with Atleti, where everything revolves around him, or go to a club where he will never enter into history,” he told El Larguero.

“If he decides not to continue with us we must respect his decision. Some time ago I spoke with his sister and his agent to make them an offer and in the next few days they will have to give us an answer.

“I’m neither optimistic nor pessimistic, I don’t know what will happen. It’s not a decision to make in the heat of the moment after a final.”

Gil Marin also commented about a possible breakdown in relations with Barcelona if Griezmann does go to the Camp Nou, having already published a statement attacking Barca after their President Josep Maria Bartomeu said he had spoken with the player’s agent.

“It does not make any sense what they are doing. After the statement Bartomeu did not answer me but said that he is working on other scenarios, whether Griezmann is there or not,” he told El Cope.
