Australia held by South Africa

Spain’s World Cup opponents Australia drew 1-1 with South Africa today in a pre-tournament warm-up game.

South Africa took the lead after 13 minutes through Ayanda Patosi but Socceroos captain Tim Cahill netted an equaliser a minute later.

Australia have one more friendly before the competition gets underway, against Croatia in Salvador on June 7.

The goal was Cahill’s 33rd for his country. The New York Red Bulls midfielder replaced Mile Jedinak as captain after the Crystal Palace midfielder suffered a groin injury playing for his club.

Spain and Australia meet in the final round of Group games, on June 23. Chile and the Netherlands make up the rest of Group B.
