VDB: Best thing for Spanish football

Vicente Del Bosque has described Saturday’s upcoming Champions League final as ‘the best thing that could have happened for Spanish football.’

The showpiece event in Lisbon will be a Madrid derby between Atletico and Real, with the former looking for their maiden elite European title and the latter going in search of a historic tenth.

Speaking to Canal Plus, the national team boss paid tribute to both sides’ runs to the final but found it difficult to predict which team would be dominant.

“Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have shown to Europe that they have a fantastic style of play,” Del Bosque said. “It’s difficult to know who will have control of the match, I hope it alternates.

“It will be a passionate encounter and it is the best thing that could have happened for Spanish football.

“Atletico Madrid played a great match in London against Chelsea, as did Real Madrid against Bayern Munich.”
