Cerezo ‘never thought Barca were out’

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has said he expected the title race to go down to the wire and be fought on three fronts.

None of the top three won this weekend, with Atletico beaten by Getafe as Barcelona and Real Madrid drew at home, to Getafe and Valencia respectively.

Cerezo was appeared on Spanish radio and was asked if the results keep Barca in the title race.

“Everyone’s enjoying it. They said Barca were out but I never believed it,” he replied.

“I always said that until you’re mathematically satisfied, you can’t give a verdict.

“A lot can happen to the theories.”

Cerezo added that any suggestion Barca will willingly lose to Atletico on the final day in an effort to harm Madrid was ludicrous.

“I still haven’t met in my life one team that comes to lose a game. Never. It’s the same as a team who buys a player or a Coach and doesn’t think they’ll do well,” he said.

“Levante yesterday gave an example of professionalism and Valencia went to do the same, but the Madrid game didn’t turn out as I thought.

“The truth is the draw was fine with me. What I wanted was Madrid not to win. I thought they would be four or five goals. I would have settled for a Madrid win by no more than three.”

Cerezo also criticised the Barca players for saying they couldn’t win the League after dropping points to Getafe.

“Until it’s mathematically settled you can’t venture anything,” he argued.

“Celta Vigo are a great team, Real Valladolid are trying to avoid the drop, Elche can play and Malaga are precarious. Everyone has the same problem.

“This Sunday can clarify many things. We all have to play and you can’t give a verdict.”

Atleti’s game at Levante was marred by racist taunts direct at Pape Diop. Diop responded by dancing in front of the Atleti fans.

Cerezo condemned the abusers and said such attitudes have no place at the club.

“Sport is primarily education, respect for players of any nationality and colour,” he continued.

“The club have always supported this. We have no problem with any player.

“It’s illogical that black players are treated badly when they’re against you but your black players are treated as kings.”
