Cerezo ‘knew Atletico would win’

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has said he was confident his side would beat Chelsea and reach the Champions League final.

Goals from Adrian, Diego Costa and Arda Turan gave Atletico a 3-1 win after Fernando Torres had put Chelsea in front.

Atletico will now play Real Madrid in the Champions League final, to be held on May 24 in Lisbon.

Marca has reported the President as saying after the final whistle that he had confidence in Atleti to progress.

“I’m happy. I knew we were going through after Chelsea scored first because I expected us to recover,” he said.

“This hasn’t happened for 40 years and on May 24 we will have waited a long time.

“When Chelsea scored the first goal I knew we were going to come back and that we would qualify.

“It’s not easy to win here. Chelsea are a great team and have their approach. But we have been better from the first minute and we were able to score.

“It’s an historic final for Atletico Madrid.”

Cerezo added that he’s never had a happier moment as Atletico President than when Arda scored his side’s third goal, but hopes that feeling is eclipsed with the final.

“So now it’s Atletico and Madrid in Lisbon, a nice city. The people here are extraordinary,” Cerezo continued.

“We’ve achieved what we have thought from the beginning. We’re the only team not to have lost a game in the Champions League this season and I hope that we don’t.

“When we got the third goal it was a very exciting time for everyone who was watching the game and also for me.

“There have been many happy and some sad moments [as President]. And this, today is the happiest and I hope the 24th is much happier.”
