Palop announces retirement

Former Sevilla and Spain goalkeeper Andres Palop has announced he is to retire at the end of the season.

Palop, currently of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, has released a statement on his official website confirming his decision.

“Thanks to all my clubs, teammates, Coaches and directors for their confidence,” Marca reports the 40-year-old as saying.

“It was an extraordinary experience. I’ve been privileged to have lived through unforgettable moments for every club I played for.”

Palop began his career at Valencia and won La Liga twice, as well as the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

He switched to Sevilla in 2005 and claimed two more UEFA Cups, another UEFA Super Cup and twice won the Copa del Rey.

Palop was also part of the Spain squad for the 2012 European Championships, although never appeared for La Roja.
