Undiano Mallenco to ref Clasico

Alberto Unidano Mallenco will take charge of the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu later this month.

The sides meet on March 23 and Mallenco, from Pamplona, has been appointed as the man in charge.

Mallenco also officiated the first League meeting between the clubs this season, with Barca winning 2-1 through goals from Neymar and Alexis Sanchez. Jese netted a late consolation for Los Blancos.

It is the first time in 20 years that one referee has been assigned both League games, Marca notes. Mallenco was also in charge of the Copa del Rey final between the teams in 2011, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the only goal.

Mallenco will be in charge of his seventh League Clasico, with Barca winning four of the previous six. The other two have seen one draw and one win for Madrid, in 2012.

But Madrid have won both Cup meetings between the pair that Mallenco has overseen, including last season’s 3-1 victory.

Mallenco will match the record number of Clasicos refereed set by Jose Maria Ortiz de Mendibil.
