Martinez: Italy win important

Javi Martinez believes Spain’s game against and win over Italy is a crucial step in La Roja’s World Cup preparations.

Pedro’s second half goal was enough for Vicente Del Bosque’s side to beat the Azzurri, who Spain also beat in the final of Euro 2012.

“It was an important test because it’s the last game before the squad for the World Cup,” Martinez told reporters.

“It was important to test ourselves and we did. I felt like we did well in attack and defence.”

Martinez played in the centre of Spain’s defence, in partnership with Sergio Ramos, and after the match confirmed it’s a position in which he feels comfortable.

“This year I’ve been playing more as a centre back,” Martinez said of his role at Bayern Munich.

“All last year I played in midfield but now I have changed to play further back. I feel good in that position.

“I hope this versatility is worth it to help the team.”
