Keller: Madrid punished our mistakes

Schalke Coach Jens Keller has pinpointed errors made by his side as the cause of Real Madrid’s 6-1 win on Wednesday.

The victory gives Los Blancos one foot in the next round of the Champions League and Keller told his post-match Press conference that Schalke were the architects of their own downfall.

“We made too many basic errors,” Keller said.

“We started well, playing bravely, high up the pitch and then we conceded the opener.

“It came from a mistake but we had a chance immediately to equalise. Opportunities like that don’t come along often against Madrid.”

Keller added that the game could have gone much differently if Julian Draxler had netted after Madrid took the lead.

“Perhaps it would have been a different game if we had scored, with the fans behind us.

“They were really in the Champions League mood this evening and supported us until the end.”

Keller concluded by predicting better for his side in the future, believing the heavy defeat will act as a learning experience for his youngsters.

“We knew Real would use the space we gave them after they scored the opening goal and they punished us almost every time we made a mistake.

“We are a young team who still have a lot to learn at this level. In future we have to show more determination in situations like this.”
