Cerezo wants derby sportsmanship

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has said he hopes Sunday’s Madrid derby is played with the right attitude.

Speaking to AS, Cerezo said that while the quality of football can’t be guaranteed, he had much more confidence in predicting the manner of the fixture.

“It will be the fourth time we’ve played this season but this time on equal footing and in our stadium,” Cerezo said.

“It will be a good derby. I don’t know if we’ll see good football but at least there will be sportsmanship.

“We have a great desire to beat Madrid, the League leaders.”

It was put to Cerezo that Atletico’s recent performances have lacked the effervescence of earlier in the season.

“Who says Atleti are deflated? We’ll give away an air pump. As I said, we really want to beat Madrid,” he replied.

“We don’t think about the Copa semi-final. It’s already in the past.

“Our starting aim for the season was the top four and we won’t have any problems with that.

“Do we want to fight for the League? Of course, but step by step.”

Cerezo concluded by offering insight into Atletico’s proposed new home.

“For everyone at Atletico this is very satisfying and we hope that when it’s completed it will be one of the best stadiums in Europe,” Cerezo added.

“The parking will be fine, more than enough, inside and outside, to accommodate 72,000 spectators.

“This is a stage to enjoy and be comfortable in.”
