Varane feeling good after comeback

Raphael Varane was happy to report he didn’t suffer any negative affects after making his comeback from injury.

Varane played the full 90 minutes of Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid, a victory that puts Los Blancos in the Copa del Rey final with a 5-0 aggregate win.

Barring a brief run out against Athletic Bilbao the game was Varane’s first for two months, having undergone knee surgery and struggled with the repercussions.

“The knee has responded,” Varane told reporters.

“I think it’s good and I felt good. I am very happy after so long without playing. It’s a joy.

“It’s hard when you’re not playing but I worked hard and now I’m back.

“I’ll see how my knee responds to this match, see if there’s any swelling tomorrow. Gradually I’ll be back in full.”

Varane said that it was to be expected some observers would question if he was ever going to return to his best after so long out, but he feels he had to take as long as was necessary.

“I think when a player’s out for a long time it’s normal there’s questions.

“But I trust myself, I trust the doctors and soon I think I’ll be at top form. Rest was the best option.”

Having made his club comeback Varane admitted international football was also on his agenda – namely the summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

“It’s an important goal and I’m fortunate to have that opportunity,” Varane said.

“I have to play well for Madrid though and then I can think about the World Cup.”
