An MP for the Basque Nationalist Party has insisted that Spain wouldn’t be welcomed as the home team in Bilbao.
Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames stadium has been put forward as one of the country’s host venues for the 2020 European Championships.
But Jose Luis Bilbao Eguren believes that La Roja could not play in the Basque country ‘in a normalised way’.
“The objective conditions are not currently in place for Spain to play at San Mames in any normalised way,” he told Radio Euskadi.
“Spain would be welcome to play there as the away team against the Basque Country, just like France, Germany or England.
"Let's see if the Kingdom of Spain still exists then, as a kingdom and under the name Spain", he went on, in an allusion to the troubled Spanish monarchy and the rising separatism in Catalonia and the Basque Country.
