Mendilibar linked with West Brom post

Reports in England suggest West Bromwich Albion are close to appointing former Osasuna boss Jose Luis Mendilibar as their new manager.

The Baggies have spoken to several candidates since the axing of Steve Clarke in mid-December, including Pepe Mel who was recently sacked as Coach of Real Betis, and could well be about to turn to Spain again in their attempts to land their man.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Albion officials held a meeting on Sunday with a view to having a new boss installed before next week’s game with Southampton, and Mendilibar appears to be favourite after initially being interviewed via Skype before Christmas.

Basque-born Mendilibar, 52, was relieved of his duties with Osasuna in September following a poor start to the season, having previously been in charge at Real Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao.
