Godin: A title push? I hope so…

Diego Godin says that there is still much of the season remaining, but that he does hope Atletico Madrid can continue towards a title challenge.

Atleti have ended 2013 level on points at the top of La Liga with Barcelona, five points clear of Real Madrid, prompting talk of a possible push for the crown.

“We have maintained our form, we have been very consistent and are playing well, both in the Champions League and the League,” Godin has mused on the subject this week to Uruguayan media.

“Can we win the League title? Much remains, but we hope to continue like this.”

Back in his homeland, the centre-back reflected on Uruguay’s World Cup ambitions next summer.

“I am excited for the year I have just had and especially for having qualified with Uruguay for the World Cup .

“It is clear that Italy will be our toughest opponent [in Group D]. They are one of the candidates to win the World Cup.

“They demonstrated their strength at the Confederations Cup, at recent World Cups and in European qualifying.

“There are teams that are above us. We need to think only of the match against Costa Rica, because it is the first and if we get a good result then we will surely be stronger.

“I am sure that in Brazil, Uruguay will do things well, as they have in the previous World Cup.”
